Cornell Hemp Webinar Series: Production Recommendations for Textile Fiber
Dr. David Suchoff, Assistant Professor, NC State
January 24, 2024 | 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. (EST)
Dr. David Suchoff is an Assistant Professor and Alternative Crops Extension Specialist in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at NC State. His program conducts highly collaborative, applied field research in new and emerging crops as full- or partial replacements for tobacco. Current crops researched by his program include fiber and grain hemp, sesame, organic sunflower, and fiber flax.
Dr. Suchoff also serves as the Director of the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research Hemp Research Consortium. This public-private partnership focuses on addressing key industry challenges in the national hemp space through cross-cutting research and outreach.
Interest in fiber hemp for textile and nonwoven applications is growing among North Carolina farmers and end-use manufacturers. North Carolina is currently the only state to house both large-scale decorticators and degummers. In order to meet current and future demand for textile-grade fibers, sound, data-driven agronomic recommendations need to be developed. This presentation will highlight some of the fiber hemp research and extension work initiated at NC State. We will discuss agronomic and processing challenges, results from preliminary field trials, and areas requiring further investigation to ensure that fiber hemp persists as an economically viable, socially equitable, and environmentally sustainable crop of the future.
