Cornell Hemp Webinar Series: Climate-Smart Hemp
Babu Valliyodan, Lincoln University
March 6, 2024 | 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. (EST)
Dr. Babu Valliyodan is Assist. Professor of Molecular Genetics and Genomics at the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Lincoln University, Missouri, USA. Dr. Valliyodan is the Chair of LU Hemp Institute and Director of the Climate Smart Commodities Program at Lincoln University. In addition, Dr. Valliyodan is an Adjunct at the Division of Plant Sciences, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO.
Current research focuses of Dr. Valliyodan’s laboratory are the application of genetic and genomic technologies to study genome variations and complex trait improvement in legumes and industrial hemp. This includes dissecting the molecular/biochemical regulation of crop resilience traits, carbon sequestration traits, and application of molecular genetics tools, including genome editing for value-added and plant performance traits towards yield improvement/climate-smart sustainable agriculture. Also, his laboratory is working with the animal/poultry nutrition team to investigate the potential use of hemp meal as animal feed and with biofuel stakeholders to develop SAF from hemp oil. He is working closely with the USDA Hemp program and participating in the national efforts to establish this crop as a climate-smart commodity. Dr. Valliyodan serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals, including Corp Science, Plants, Plant Physiology, and Frontiers in Genetics. More than 80 peer-reviewed publications and a couple of U.S. patents on crop resilience applications.
Dr. Valliyodan will present an overview of the team’s efforts in developing industrial hemp as a climate-smart commodity in the U.S.
