Cornell Hemp Webinar Series: Weed Management
Lynn Sosnoskie, Cornell University
April 3, 2024 | 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. (EST)
Sosnoskie’s research focuses on the management of weeds in specialty crops, including hemp. In addition to conducting herbicide safety screens, she is evaluating the performance and safety of novel weed control technology, such as electric weeders, precision sprayers, and autonomous robotic cultivators. She is currently running IR-4 trials to evaluate novel herbicides for their use in hop production.
Given the lack of herbicides for the control of weeds in hemp, growers must employ Integrated Weed Management (IWM) techniques to successfully produce the crop. This presentation will discuss the importance of weed biology when developing a weed management program, provide links to identification tools (including phone apps) that are available to growers, describe what is known about the competitiveness of hemp varieties, go over the use of ethalfluralin (a registered, soil-applied pre-emergence herbicide) for weed control, provide guidance with respect to the use cultural and physical weed control practices (e.g., site selection, stale seedbed techniques, etc…), and present results from herbicide screens to understand what future chemical control options may look like.
