Cornell Hemp Webinar Series: Novel High Oleic Acid Seed Oil Trait

Following postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Oxford and Carnegie Department Plant Biology, Stanford, California, Ian took up a faculty position and set up his own lab in the UK at the University of Glasgow, in 1994. In 1999 he moved to become the the Weston Chair of Biochemical Genetics in the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products at the University of York, where he remains, with his research focussed on biosynthesis of plant natural products and how these can be developed for various industrial applications. Representing the University of York, Ian was granted the UK Plant Breeders’ Rights for a high oleic hemp seed variety in February 2021.

Ian was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016, and is a Science Trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Ian is also the academic lead for BioYorkshire, a partnership involving the University of York, Fera Science and Askham Bryan College that aims to deliver green economic growth, and Director of the UK Government funded High Value Biorenewables Network.
